Collage Art:
Artist Statement for Collage: I had a lot of fun making this collage because it allowed me to show people something I really like: food. I wanted the food to stand out so I made sure the background of the collage was a bland wall of text so the colorful food would show up better (contrast). I tried to find pictures of foods that were big and put them behind the small foods so that both would stand out. The lines were supposed to be crooked on the edges of the masses of food because smoother lines would have made the collage seem awkward. I did not purposefully include texture, but the food is what gives the collage texture. I found it difficult to include any value since the collage already had areas of value within each picture. The middle patch of text was meant to direct the viewers eyes to the more exciting part of the collage, the food on the outsides. An area I could improve on is value because it can really add to a piece to make it seem more realistic or just better looking. The reason I chose food for the theme of my collage is because food is something that most people can relate to. It doesn't matter what political party you associate with, your race or your color, food can be a way for people to get together and set aside their differences. I think food is not just something to keep you nourished, but a way to escape from the world's problems. I created the collage by cutting out pieces of text from magazines, and then gluing them to the paper as the first layer of the collage. The second layer was all the foods that I had collected and I made sure to put the larger pieces behind the small ones so that every food would be noticed.
Printmaking Map Portraits:
For these three map portraits my goal was to teach people a little bit about me and my family. Behind the ink portrait is a map of Taiwan. Half of my family is from Taiwan, so it has a big impact on my life. I go to Taiwan each year and every time I learn more about the different cultures there. I made sure to enlarge the map so that it would draw more attention than my face. The message I wanted to give is that even the smallest of countries, like Taiwan, can have more spirit and culture than large places like America. The size does not really matter, but the people are more important because they are what make a country what it is. Even though America is giant, I feel that there is not much culture because we have moved on so fast that we take little time to remember the things in the past.
Three Mini Tutorials:
Who Am I? :
This project helped me learn more about layers. I also leaned how to use the quick selection and the text tool.
Social Commentary
I picked this "issue" because it bothered me that someone with no political experience could end up as president. He was a business man, and that has nothing to do with politics, and now this man is running our country.
I chose this issue because it shows that society hasn't come very far social wise. People still think that other humans aren't equal for some reason, and that is fine, but when it hurts other people, it becomes much worse. There is no way to completely stop everyone from thinking other's aren't equal, but there should be ways to ensure no one gets hurt.
This is scary and funny at the same time because a wall would cost lots of money and time to finish, and second, Trump wants Mexico to pay for the wall. Instead of improving the relationship between a border country, we are pushing them away from us.
Final
The point of this final is to show that there is so much food in the world, yet many people have no access to it. There is repetition with the burgers in the sky, and with the houses. We wanted to have the man on the bottom stand out by making him black.
